My Wacky Gym Sketch

This sketch was inspired by Dr. Seuss. He loved to invent but he wasn't good at physically putting things together, so he drew his wonderful elaborated contraptions on paper instead. I sketched this “fictional” gym based on Dr. Seuss's idea of creativity. In this unconventional gym, everyone works together to get a single task (get five balls in 5 different tubes) done. Everyone's effort is important to achieve the fastest time to complete the task.

  • Top Right. Three people have to constantly jump on “accordions” to keep the ball aloft in the transparent cylinder. The higher the ball in the air(indicated by the H, M, L markings on the cylinder), the higher the water flows out of the water tank.
  • Top Middle. A person rides a bicycle to move the conveyer belt with containers attached. The containers hold water and pours the water into a ramp. Faster the user petals, the more water is transported into the ramp.
  • Center. A user continuously steps on the stair stepper to rotate a large gear. The large gear lifts the ramp to its maximum height.The user has to constantly step to keep the ramp at its max height in order to increase the water flow rate. The water is pour into a container which rests on a one end of the hydraulic lift.
  • Middle Left. The weight of the water in the container pushes the other end of the lift. The lift steadily rises which tilts a platform and releases a ball into a big funnel. The higher the lift rises, the more balls are released into the funnel.
  • Lower Left. As the ball is traveling into the funnel, the user has to decide which lane of the 3 (left, middle or right) by stepping on the corresponding step. The choice of lane determines how accurately the ball will roll into the side-moving hole ( on the lower right). If the user doesn't step in time as the ball rolls near the exit, the ball rolls straight out, wasting a ball (which wastes a chance to complete the task faster).
  • Lower Middle. The users are balancing on levers with the fulcrums at the center. Each user steers the ball into the side-moving hole as the ball pass their platform.
  • Lower Right. As a ball accurately goes into the side-moving hole, the ball loops around in a tube and exits out a narrow tube in order for the ball to travel in a straight line.
  • Bottom Right. The last person must adjust the angle of the ramp to accurately project the ball into 5 different tubes of different heights. When each tube contains a ball, the task is complete.
