* Laser cutters are becoming more prevalent in the design and prototyping industries for their ability to quickly cut two dimensional shapes from various materials. However, current standalone systems are not affordable solutions for achieving these goals. CNC mills and laser cutting systems share common sub-systems. Our goal is to save space and reduce costs and further CNC machine functionality by designing and retrofitting a laser system into existing milling machines. Ul…

Introduction

Electrospinning is a technique that is used to produce nano and micro scale fibers which have various applications in fields such as biomedical engineering. A syringe filled with a polymer solution is mounted on a syringe pump, which slowly pumps out droplets of solution. A strong electric field is set up in an enclosure using a high voltage power source. The electrostatic forces produced by this field propel the droplets from the tip of the syringe, spinning it into fibe…

[ ]

In tissue engineering, it is often desirable to be able to cyclically load cell cultures under hydrostatic pressure. To fulfill this task, researchers at Mount Sinai Medical Center have designed and built a hydrostatic pressure loader mostly out of off-the-shelf parts. While this device works quite well, it has the limitation of requiring an Instron tester to actuate it. Our goal at Cooper Union is to design a new method of achieving similar loading conditions without being tethered to exp…

Introduction

The intersection between the biological sciences and engineering has great potential to solve many medically-relevant issues. Currently, research for these issues demands advanced testing systems for biological materials. One such piece of equipment used in biological engineering research is the bioreactor. A bioreactor may refer to any engineered device or system that sustains a biologically active environment.
