DrawBot

A drawbot designed to use an arduino and 2 stepper motors to control the position of a marker and trace out a triangle.

Front

The front was built to slant slightly backwards, with strings and spools mounted onto the motors above via epoxy and hot glue. Two pins were used to more accurately located where the string was when in was drawing on the paper, so that when programming the origin of the string could be set to to two corners of the paper. The pen was mounted on a wooden circ…

Cartilage

The Articular Cartilage at the end of the knee is a type of Hyaline cartilage. The cartilage consists of a matrix of collagen fibers, proteoglycan, elastin fibers, and cells called Chondrocytes. The extra-cellular matrix is maintained by the Chondrocytes, which rest in small pockets known as lacunae in groups of 2+. The collagen fibers function as the bulk connective proteins in the matrix, while proteoglycans work to attract water into the semi-permeable matrix to bring…

Game Glove

Here is the model of our “Game Glove” in Solidworks. The Game Glove consists of 5 buttons at the base of each finger and an accelerometer that measures tilt and movement in the palm in order to control a video game. The wrist holds the batteries, an On/Off and Start button (the one with the yellow “glove” on it),and a usb connector to allow the user to hook up the controller to their computer and modify it. The back hold stylish blue LEDs because they're cool. The outline of the …

Problem Statement

Stress to the cartilage can cause degradations of sections of cartilage. Current methods are invasive, and have negative lasting effects. Our goal is to develop a robust method of attaching In-Vitro cartilage to bone to allow for the surgical repair of damaged cartilage in a way that is simple, minimally invasive, and will have the fewest long-term effects for the patient.

Testing

Our initial tests are looking into the relative strength of our velcro on loops under shear forces without considering the strength of the attachment. The machine used to test the force required to pull the velcro apart is a mechanical load tester that was previously built to test the strength of the cartilage grown into velcro loops:
