January 2012

Monday, 30th

  • Initial meeting with Rob Marano.
  • Discussed expectations/goals for this semester, which are to design, then model digitally all aspects of our selected punkin chunkin device. Following this, we will build a scale model of our design.
  • Given the assignment of researching the rules for the competition.

February 2012

Thursday, 2nd

  • Meeting in 15C to select 6 drawings to present as our groups best ideas

Monday, 6th

  • Met with Rob
  • Discussed the rules for the competition.
  • Decided on the fact that we would enter the Trebuchet portion of the competition.
  • Given our next assignment: Model a pumpkin, and explain the physics of a trebuchet.

Friday, 10th

  • Met at Frankies and then Computer Lab to type up problem statement.

Thursday, 16th

  • Met after class to discuss filming options and how to contact Rob.
  • Considered Google+ hangouts as a free alternative to video chat.

Tuesday, 21st

  • Met at Frankies to create script for video.
  • Met with Lima to discuss further work in the event we cannot reach Rob
  • Lima assigns us to make solidworks trebuchets —> laser cutter design

Wednesday, 22nd

  • Met in Menschel to film.
  • Finished editing

March 2012

Thursday, 1st

  • Met as subgroups to work on the papers describing the Floating Arm Trebuchet and the Floating Axle King Arthur Trebuchet.
  • The papers were emailed to Rob Marano.

Tuesday, 6th

  • FAT group met at computer lab to model the laser cut parts in solidworks

Wednesday, 7th

  • FAT group met at 7th floor lab to laser cut trebuchet parts from acrylic.
  • FAKA group does the same, at a later time.
  • Began working on our midterm presentation.

Thursday, 8th

  • Met in our sub groups to work on the construction of the FAT and FAKA models.
  • Met to finish and rehearse our midterm presentation.

Monday, 19th

  • Met as a group to create the sling for the trebuchets.
  • Began discussing our bed-lifter ideas and the house of quality.

Wednesday, 21st

  • Tested and competed our two model trebuchets.

Sunday, 25th

  • Met as a group to finalize designs for the bed-lifter.

Tuesday, 27th

  • Began to model the bed frame for the bed-lifter.
  • Began researching materials for the bed-lifter.

Wednesday, 28th

  • Finished modeling the bed frame and assorted mechanisms. Also began assembling the bed-lifter.
  • Finished the bill of materials for the bed-lifter.

Thursday, 29th

  • Finished assembling and animating the bed-lifter.
  • Soldered the MotorShield for the Arduino.

Friday, 30th

  • Met with Rob over the phone to discuss next step. Kinetic Modeling/scale model was decided.

April 2012

Thursday, 5th

  • Split up tasks to research and design the scale model. Talked to Mike about where/how to build the model.

Saturday, 14th

  • Bought materials for the support structure of the trebuchet

Tuesday, 18th

  • Met at lab, laser cut spools from wood, gathered other various materials

Thursday, 19th

  • Met at lab, put together most of the physical parts of the drawbot (strings, spools, marker mount, etc.)

Friday, 20th

  • Worked on the drawbot

Monday, 23rd

  • Worked in the Machine Shop to build the support structure of the trebuchet

Tuesday, 24th

  • Worked in the Machine Shop to build the support structure of the trebuchet

Wednesday, 25th

  • Worked in the Machine Shop to build the support structure of the trebuchet

Thursday, 26th

  • Bought additional wood for the support structure of the trebuchet

Friday, 27th

  • Completed the support structure of the trebuchet in the machine shop
  • Recorded the video for the end of the year show
  • Researched materials

May 2012

Friday, 4th

  • Researched steel suppliers and materials
