Effect of tile geometry on the ballistic impact of Silicon Carbide

Summer 2012

I researched whether or not the size of silicon carbide tiles affects how the tile fractures. For my research, I created targets out of various sized hexagonal silicon carbide tiles, Deerfield Thermoplastic Urethane and polycarbonate. I helped set up and cleaned up the range and the light gas gun that was used to shoot the targets. I also analyzed the damage of the silicon carbide by measuring crack length with Image Pro Plus.
