3 pm to 4 pm
We met as a group for an hour prior to the meeting with Ganesh and Raphael, our mentors. During this time each member presented their eight pages of sketches to the other members.
Wojciech's sketches focused on the LEDs, their housing and a method of attaching them to the perforated mesh on the outside of the New Academic Building. He presented a very innovative design for connecting each individual infrared LED to the mesh and brought up an important issue, the metal beams supporting the mesh will create gaps in our water mark if we attach the LEDs behind the skin of the building.
Jenna's ideas were oriented toward the design of the actual water mark. Most of her sketches were static images pasted on to the mesh. She specifically wanted to find a way to enhance the school; do something so ambitious and creative that when people here “Cooper Union” they immediately think, “Oh, that's the school infrared whatever on it.” She specifically thought it would be fun to put a genie on the mesh.
Like Jenna, Peter's ideas were also focused on the the water mark design. However, his involved animating the mesh with the LEDs rather than just using a static image. He specifically wanted to combine the Giving Tree with the IR Watermark Project, animating its progress and growth as an incentive for people to donate to the school when they walk by and take a picture. He also mentioned the importance of the placement of the mark as to not interfere with the aesthetics of the building.
The group decided to wait until after discussing the project with the mentors to determine what ideas to present to Friday's class for the critique.
4 pm to 5 pm
The group had a meeting with their mentors at The Tiger Party at 4 pm. Ganesh introduced himself as the creative brains of the operation and Raphael, as the engineer, was the one that helps bring the ideas to life. Each group member presented their sketches to the mentors and then Ganesh described what he had in mind for the project.
Ganesh expressed interest for an animated and hopefully interactive water mark on the building. He showed us examples of some of his work, such as animating the Vogue building in Las Vegas, and other people's work that he found particularly interesting. However, because he, like us, was not certain on the direction of the project, everything was left more-or-less open ended.
The mentors requested that when we come in for our next meeting we would have chosen a direction, decided which member will be mainly in charge of programming, design, and the hardware, and have created a schedule for the semester.
After this meeting and discussing the project briefly with Professor Lima after class, it was determined that Wojciech would sketch out two sheets of hardware ideas, Jenna would draw out two sheets of static designs and Peter would design two pages of animated and interactive water marks for Friday's critique.
