March Minutes

03/27/12

Kristin Miller and Yee ho Song met and discussed specifics on manufacturing parts for Polly III and redesign of the spine part. They also discussed on using the orange fabric skin candidate to make fins, although in different color.

03/26/12

Kristin Miller and Yee ho Song met and discussed about Polly III design. They also discussed about how to tailor fabric skin for Polly. They decided to first make a rough shape from inexpensive, easy to use material and use that as a template for the real skin material.

03/21/12

Kristin Miller and Yee ho Song met to work on the Polly project. They observed the conditions of the materials that had been left to dry after the previous day's underwater testing. No significant differences were observed. They discussed using laser cutting methods for the manufacture of Polly III. They discussed sensor options and the differences of medium in use of sensors in water with Professor Wolf. He also told them how to calculate the torque needed to pull the tail. They tested Polly II with a spring scale to determine the force necessary for different lengths of pull. The test was conducted both in air and underwater. Force was also measured for a strong, quick pull. The IR sensor (Sharp GP2D12) was tested underwater and was found to be functional. The data and video were processed and were uploaded to the wiki along with new concept drawings.

03/20/12

Kristin Miller and Yee ho Song discussed new design concepts for the final Polly. They discussed the propeller diameter for the water jet. They visited Radio Shack to inquire about sensors capable of underwater operations. They experimented with possible materials in water and took video and notes and uploaded them to the wiki.

03/09/12

Kristin Miller and Yee ho Song uploaded pictures and video to the wiki. They also met with Daniel Bach, Gary Go, and Jonathan Yong to work on combining the PowerPoint presentation.

03/08/12

The group met with Mike Bambino to discuss progress and this week's goals. Please see the goals listed on the main Polly page.

03/07/12

Kristin Miller and Yee ho Song went to Mood, Canal Rubber, and Canal Plastics to research and obtain materials for the construction of the prototype. A better, more flexible material (.03 in PTEG) was found for the fish “spine”. They also bought foam for the fins, samples of fabrics, and decided to use fishing line for the tendons. Polly II was modified (now called Polly IIB) to use PTEG instead of lexan for the spine. Polly IIB was attached to a servo motor to test for effectiveness of this change and was found to be a good material. Kristin and Yee ho decided that a more powerful servo was necessary to power the steering mechanism and that a longer steering arm would allow for bigger tail movements. Video was recorded of Polly IIB's spine movements. The servo was reprogrammed to change the angles of motion from 45 degrees to 75 degrees and a 0.5 second delay was added between movements to make observations easier.

03/02/12

Kristin Miller and Yee ho Song met to build the spine mock up. They cut and drilled lexan for spine, lasercut acrylic for bulkheads, and use dental floss for tendons. They also performed an analysis of the design and found what improvements should be made. They took several pictures and some video to document this.

03/01/12

Kristin Miller and Yee ho Song met to discuss on spine mock up design and drawing them on Autocad.
