==Purpose==

This mechanism moves a vertical protrusion up in a controlled manner and then drops it suddenly.

==How it Works==

The half-gear turns counter-clockwise, which moves the rack up.  The rack suddenly drops when it reaches the part of the gear that has no teeth on it and is pulled down by a spring.
